Philippine Constabulary
700 of the 1,200 people in the Philippine Village were soldiers enlisted in the Philippine branches of the US Army: the Constabulary and the Scouts. They performed daily drills and were also responsible for guarding the inhabitants of the native villages from escaping. They were comprised of ethnic groups across the Philippines, including Indigenous people, but were purposefully set in contrast with their countrymen in traditional attire to demonstrate to the American public that military training could “civilize” Filipinos. While the soldiers enjoyed more freedom than the villagers, they also faced discrimination in St. Louis society—especially when seen courting white women.
The Constabulary also featured a band that was led by an African American soldier, Walter Loving. There were two deaths in the group.
