Pensionados
The pensionados at the 1904 World’s Fair were a group of 100 scholarship students from elite families in the Philippines who visited St. Louis for one month in August 1904. They were employed as office clerks and guides in the exhibit and lived in the soldiers’ quarters. Many sought to distance themselves from the Indigenous people who were dehumanized during the fair rather than defend them. The pensionado program was intended to prepare the students to return to the Philippines and run the colonial government.
