Maura, or Mura, was a Kankanaey Igorot woman from Suyoc, Benguet listed to have been 18 years old, but was likely older. She briefly lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation. She came down with pneumonia on April 11 and died at Mullanphy Hospital on April 21, 1904 before the opening the World’s Fair. She was the mother of two sons who did not travel to St. Louis with her.

After Maura’s death, her cerebellum was sent to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC and was later incinerated for unknown reasons, possibly because it wasn’t able to be preserved. Her corpse was displayed at Cullen & Kelly, a funeral home in St. Louis, for the duration of the fair and became part of the attractions. It remains unknown whether her body ever returned home.

In April 2021 on Maura’s death anniversary, I established the Philippine Village Historical Site in her honor.

Joaquin Amayo was a private in Company A of the Philippine Constabulary. He died September 18, 1904 at 21 years old from beriberi. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, and his grave is marked with a headstone.

Datu Bulan Amboc was a Bagobo chief from the southeast coast of Mindanao listed to have been 19 years old. He lived in the Bagobo Village on the Philippine Reservation. He was photographed by the Gerhard Sisters.

He lived in in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation and was photographed by Jessie Tarbox Beals. He was also photographed in Bontoc by Dean Worcester prior to the 1904 World’s Fair.

Consuelo Asuncion was a Visayan baby born during the World’s Fair on September 12, 1904. Her parents were Salud Funcion and Dionicio Asuncion.

Dionicio Asuncion was a Tagalog man from Manila around 20 years old. On the ship to the United States he met and fell in love with Salud Funcion. They were married at the Visayan church on the Philippine Reservation. He is the father of Consuelo Asuncion, who was born during the World’s Fair. He lived in the Visayan Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Attao was an Igorot man from Bontoc, Mountain Province who lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Ramon Attas 🌿

Ramon Attas was a young Bagobo man who died on July 24, 1904 from smallpox shortly after arriving in St. Louis in early July. He was listed to have been around age 18 at his time of death. He is buried in an unmarked mass grave at the Quarantine Cemetery of the former Robert Koch Hospital in St. Louis.

Francisco Azucena

Francisco Azucena was a carpenter who arrived in St. Louis in 1903 prior to the opening of the fair. He went to jail in Clayton on February 28, 1904 for, reportedly, drinking too much, then assaulting an American in “jungle warfare style” (The St. Louis Republic, February 29, 1904).

Bacasen

Bacasen was a Kankanaey Igorot man from Suyoc, Benguet listed to have been 24 years old, but was likely closer to 30. He lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation. Alfonso Barbago

Alfonso Barbago was an Aeta boy around six years old who lived in the Negrito Village on the Philippine Reservation. He was skilled with a bow and arrow and shot sparrows while in St. Louis under orders from the president of the Philippine Exposition Board.

Modesto Barrera

Modesto Barrera was a Bagobo man from Davao del Sur listed to have been 21 years old. He lived in the Bagobo Village on the Philippine Reservation. It was reported that he attempted to stab his companion Ramon Untas and was withheld from further participation in public demonstrations, but this remains unconfirmed.

Basgnuid

Basgnuid was a Kankanaey Igorot woman from Suyoc, Benguet listed to have been 17 years old. She lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Basilio 🌿

Basilio was an Aeta man from Mariveles, Bataan listed in various sources to have been between 25-45 years old. He died on April 3, 1904 from pneumonia shortly after arriving in St. Louis. He left behind a wife and daughter, who were with him at the World’s Fair. He is buried in St. Louis at Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Basilio

Mrs. Basilio was an Aeta woman from Mariveles, Bataan who lived in the Negrito Village on the Philippine Reservation. She was only referred to as Mrs. Basilio in newspaper accounts, and her actual name is unknown. She traveled with her husband Basilio to St. Louis. She also gave birth to a daughter during the fair.

Bayongasan/Lepdagen

Bayongasan, also known as Lepdagen, was a Kankanaey Igorot man from Suyoc, Benguet and the eldest in the group at around 50 years old. He led prayers for native rituals during the fair. He lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation and was photographed by the Gerhard Sisters. He died in 1938 and had descendants who settled in the United States. She gave birth to Louisa Francis Bihinang during the World’s Fair on April 12, 1904.

Louisa Francis Bihinang 🐚🌿

Louisa Francis Bihinang was an Aeta baby born on April 12, 1904 during the World’s Fair. Her parents were Bihinang and Sayas. She was named after the city of St. Louis, the president of the World’s Fair (David R. Francis), and her mother (Bihinang). She died 10 days later on April 22, 1904 from inanition. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis under the name Ninita.

Flotilda Blanco was a Visayan woman from the central Philippines who lived in the Visayan Village on the Philippine Reservation. She was a weaver and spoke English and Spanish. She was reported to have said that she wanted to stay in the United States, but whether she actually did remains unconfirmed.

Antero Cabrera ✔

Antero Cabrera was an Igorot boy from Bontoc, Mountain Province listed to have been 12 years old. He was adopted after his mother died in 1900 and worked for Truman K. Hunt, who later became the manager of the Igorot Village in St. Louis, and the anthropologist Albert Jenks in the Philippines. He spoke English and often interpreted for his elders during the World’s Fair. (See sources: Fermin, Jose D.) His story was featured in a PBS episode of “Asian Americans” in 2020.

Julio Congo was an Igorot man from Bontoc, Mountain Province listed to have been 26 years old. His wife also traveled with him to St. Louis. He lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Mrs. Congo was an Igorot woman from Bontoc, Mountain Province. She was only referred to as Mrs. Congo in newspaper accounts, and her first name is unknown. She lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation. She traveled with her husband Julio Congo to St. Louis. Her photograph appeared in the newspaper after she was reported to have sought separation from Julio after he gave a gift of an orange to Petra Antonio during the fair.

Santiago Cruz 🌿

Santiago Cruz was an infant who died at the World’s Fair on May 4, 1904 from croup. He was less than one year old. His ethnic group is not known. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis in the St. Vincent de Paul lot.

Antonio Estudillo 🌿

Antonio Estudillo was a schoolteacher from Manila who traveled to St. Louis to teach English at the Model School in the Philippine Village with co-teacher Pilar Zamora. He died prior to the opening of the World’s Fair on February 24, 1904 from pneumonia at age 30. He was survived by a wife and two children in Manila. His body was repatriated to the Philippines.

Evid was a Samal girl from Mindanao. She lived in the Samal Moro Village on the Philippine Reservation. She was married to Datu Facundo.

Fabiano

Fabiano was a Meranao man from the Lake Lanao area of Mindanao. He lived in the Lake Lanao Moro Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Facdac was a member of the Samal tribe from Mindanao who lived in the Samal Moro Village on the Philippine Reservation.

Falayay was a young man around 25 years old. He was likely an Aeta, but his ethnic group is unconfirmed. He died shortly after arriving in St. Louis on March 28, 1904. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.

If he had not agreed to come to the World’s Fair, the rest of the Samal Moro group would not have attended. He visited the White House with two Igorot chiefs in July 1904. Igud was a young Bagobo man who died on July 6, 1904 from smallpox shortly after arriving in St. Louis in early July. He was listed to have been around age 18 at his time of death. He is buried in an unmarked mass grave at the Quarantine Cemetery of the former Robert Koch Hospital in St. Louis.

Maura/Mura ✔🌿

Maura, or Mura, was a Kankanaey Igorot woman from Suyoc, Benguet listed to have been 18 years old, but was likely older. She briefly lived in the Igorot Village on the Philippine Reservation. She came down with pneumonia on April 11 and died at Mullanphy Hospital on April 21, 1904 before the opening the World’s Fair. She was the mother of two sons who did not travel to St. Louis with her.

After Maura’s death, her cerebellum was sent to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC and was later incinerated for unknown reasons, possibly because it wasn’t able to be preserved. Her corpse was displayed at Cullen & Kelly, a funeral home in St. Louis, for the duration of the fair and became part of the attractions. It remains unknown whether her body ever returned home.

In April 2021 on Maura’s death anniversary, I established the Philippine Village Historical Site in her honor.

Rufus May

Rufus May was a 34-year-old man who was reported to have been the first Filipino arrested in St. Louis. According to the report, he attempted to steal a pair of trousers while at a tailor shop with his friend Andreas Ortaga. He was most likely a carpenter since this took place prior to the other groups arriving. (St. Louis Post Dispatch, March 12, 1904)

Carmen Mendoza was a 15-year-old Tagalog teenager who lived in the Visayan Village on the Philippine Reservation. She was a musician who played the harp and came to the 1904 World’s Fair to perform. She traveled to St. Louis with her brother Francisco Mendoza.

Francisco Mendoza

Francisco Mendoza was an 18-year-old Tagalog teenager who lived in the Visayan Village on the Philippine Reservation. He was a musician who played the guitar and came to the 1904 World’s Fair to perform. He traveled to St. Louis with his sister Carmen Mendoza.
